We really enjoy putting together that list, although we always have significantly more papers that we like than spots on the list. That list ends up being heavily biased towards papers published towards the end of the year. As a remedy, we thought a nice lazy midsummer activity would be to update our favorites so far. A few papers that we highlighted so far this year include a photochemical surprise, a Fenton Boat and photochemical DNA sequencing. You can read more on those in our blog. Without further ado, here is a selection of things we found fun, interesting, and confusing to start 2023.

Paper 1:

High-Throughput Determination of Stern-Volmer Quenching Constants for Common Photocatalysts and Quenchers

(Open Access)
Authors: Rachel N. Our best yet. We added new members to our team, moved into our new office and manufacturing facility, spruced up our website and shipped our new photoreactor the Lucent360™ around the globe. By our unofficial tally, our PhotoRedox Boxes were cited over 60+ times in the literature in 2022 alone including the first citation using the Lucent360. With more on the way (that we know of). We added new fun posts to our blog. and newsletter and launched even wavelength options for our EvoluChem LEDs while lowering the prices. All while continuing to offer our PhotoRedox boxes and accessories.

The year 2023 promises even bigger things and some new surprises (look for 2023 to be the year of UV). However, before we look ahead to 2023, it’s time to look back at the year that was for 2022 in photochemistry. We started this “little” exercise 2 years ago during lockdown with our list of our 20 favorite papers of 2020 and we followed up last year as well. Now, more than ever, we are certain that we missed many great papers from the past year as it is virtually impossible for anyone (non-graduate student division) to keep track of all the great papers that have been published. As we described in the past, these are our favorite 22 photocatalysis papers from 2022. This is not a list that attempts to find the best, or most viewed, or most famous 22 papers from the year. (We described our general criteria here.) Nor is this list ranked in any way other than the order that we found them. (Although, if you want to tweet out and claim that your paper was #1 on our list, we won’t stop you or argue). Instead, this is just a list of the 22 papers that we thought were the best, funniest, oddest, most interesting, or downright unexpected. Every year, we always try to make sure the list is limited to one entry per author, but we always mess that up as well.

As always, our list is inherently biased to things that are related to visible-light photocatalysis or things that we could use as test reactions for our photoboxes. Open-source articles or papers easily accessible are always likely to catch our attention. As are papers from users using our products. For the first time, we asked our users to submit their favorite papers of the year, and many of those suggestions are present in this list.

So, let’s have some fun. Keep reading for our favorite papers from 2022 and then send us your favorites on twitter (@EvoluChem) or at info@hepatochem.

Paper 1:

Stereochemical editing logic powered by the epimerization of unactivated tertiary stereocenters

Authors: Yu-An Zhang, Vignesh Palani, Alexander E.
